Falcons Take Down St. Clair in Five Set Thriller
(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Falcons Men's Volleyball team (4-2) knocked off the St. Clair Saints (2-3) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated at home this season.
The Falcons got off to a good start led by Jayden Crowther (London, ON) who made his presence felt early, soaring high for a kill and following that up with a huge block moments later. The first set saw both teams trading points early until a 4-0 run by the Falcons that provided them enough cushion to cruise to a 25-20 set win.
The second set saw St. Clair respond with a 25-20 set win of their own. Despite some great defence by the Falcons to keep balls alive, the Saints were able to pull away late to even the match.
The third set saw Tanner Paterson (Baden, ON) take over for the Birds, recording multiple kills in the set to contribute to his team high of 11 in addition to 15 total points in the match. The Falcons went on a 7-0 run in the middle of the set to hold a comfortable lead and despite some resistance from St. Clair, Fanshawe won the set 25-21.
The Falcons were looking to seal the deal in the fourth set, getting out to an early 9-5 lead. However, St. Clair had other plans as they came back from multiple deficits in the set and pushed the match to a fifth and deciding set after securing the fourth by a score of 25-22.
In the fifth frame, the Birds were determined to send their fans home happy. Despite going down 5-1 early, Fanshawe battled and displayed great defense as a team to force the Saints into multiple errors. The Falcons net defence was supplemented by their back line that kept balls alive all afternoon. The Birds complimentary play style lifted them to a thrilling win in the fifth set by a score of 15-10 to take the match 3-2.
The Falcons will be back on the road for their next games as they will travel to Sudbury for a back-to-back against Boreal (0-5) on November 16th at 8:00pm and Cambrian (3-2) on November 17th at 3:00pm.
