Falcons Top Bruins Saturday Afternoon
(London, Ontario) The Falcons Women's Volleyball team (4-7) took down the Sheridan Bruins (1-9) in four sets on Saturday afternoon at Glenn Johnson Athletic Centre.
Fanshawe started off the first set on a roll, led by Jaime Worsfold (Dorchester, ON) who was excellent at the net all afternoon, leading the Falcons with 10 kills in the match. Fanshawe controlled the lead all set long and finished off the first with a powerful kill by Worsfold to give the Falcons the set 25-16.
The second set was a tightknit affair as Sheridan battled back from an early deficit to tie the set at 20 a piece. The Falcons remained unfazed and were lifted by excellent attacking play from outside hitter Sammie Gibson (London, ON) who picked up multiple kills in the set. After trading points to extend the set to 24-24, Fanshawe locked in and secured the final two points to take it 26-24 with Gibson landing a huge kill for the set win.
The third set much like the second was as close as can be. Olivia Burberry (Dorchester, ON) drilled back-to-back aces for Fanshawe to give the Birds a slim 23-22 lead, but a resilient Bruins squad battle back and claimed the set 26-24.
The Birds opened the fourth set with an early 4-0 run to set the tone. Kaidance Matteis (Chatham, ON) stepped up in the set by rising for multiple kills, finishing with six total in the match in addition to her two blocks. Fanshawe didn't let Sheridan near the lead in the set as they won by a score of 25-16 to close the match three sets to one.
The Falcons next match will be after the winter break against Mohawk (8-3) in Hamilton on January 8th to kickstart 2025. The Birds next home game will be against Boreal (0-10) on Saturday January 18th at 6:00 p.m.
