Falcons Drop Close Game to Conestoga
The Falcons men’s basketball team (6-7, 6th West) took on the visiting Conestoga Condors (6-7, 5th West) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Thursday night
(London, ON) – The Falcons men's basketball team (6-7, 6th West) took on the visiting Conestoga Condors (6-7, 5th West) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Thursday night. In what was an extremely tight game late, Conestoga narrowly edged out a hard-fought effort from Fanshawe, 67-62.
The game was a lower-scoring affair, as both teams brought defensive intensity throughout. It took a few minutes for the Falcons to get on the board, and a slow start saw them trailing 20-13 after the first quarter, with Brandon Bogart (St. Thomas, ON) leading the offence with seven points in the frame.
Fanshawe began to close the gap in the second quarter, as Burak Djamgouz (Oakville, ON) drilled two three-pointers in four minutes of action. The Falcons outscored Conestoga 14-11 in the quarter and trailed just 31-27 heading into halftime.
The game remained tight through the third quarter, with neither team able to build an extended lead. Bogart continued to lead the way offensively, picking up eight of his game-high 18 points in the frame while manning the point guard position. Fanshawe relied heavily on perimeter play, as Conestoga's length clogged the paint throughout the night. The Falcons found themselves down 49-42 heading into the fourth.
The final quarter was back-and-forth, fast-paced, and dramatic. Fanshawe battled back to tie the game at 60 apiece on a fast-break reverse layup from Zakai Davis (Kitchener, ON). The Condors answered with two buckets of their own before the Falcons pulled within two points and had a chance to tie or take the lead with under a minute remaining. Unfortunately, that would be as close as Fanshawe would get, as they dropped the contest 67-62.
The Falcons will have one day to rest before returning to the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Saturday, January 24, for Falcons Fest. The men's basketball team is set to face the Redeemer Royals (2-10, 9th West) at 3:00 p.m., following the women's basketball game. At halftime of the men's game, the Falcons men's baseball team will receive their OCAA Championship rings in a ceremony celebrating the program's first-ever provincial title.
