(London, ON) – The Fanshawe Falcons men's volleyball team (7-1) welcomed the Boreal Vipers (0-8) to the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre for a Sunday matinee and took care of business, topping the Vipers in three sets to win their sixth straight match.
The Birds got off to a strong start in set one, leading by as much as eight points early. Fanshawe was very efficient in the opening frame, committing only one attacking error and hitting at a .583 clip. Their strong play allowed them to close out the first set relatively easily, 25-17.
The second set proved much tougher, as the Falcons found themselves trailing 20-16 late. A well-timed timeout by head coach Patrick Johnston helped the Birds regroup and battle back, eventually tying the set at 22 apiece. Oliver Prentice (London, ON), who was the main hitman for Fanshawe on the afternoon with a game-high 14 points, stepped up and delivered an ace to seal the set 25-22.
The third set featured more tightly contested play, with the teams trading points and sitting tied at 8-8. They continued to go back and forth until Fanshawe edged ahead 19-18. From there, the Birds shut the door on the Vipers' hopes, with Gustavo Aguirre (Mexico) contributing two of the Falcons' final five points to complete the three-set sweep.
The number-one-seeded Falcons will now head to Toronto to face last season's OCAA Champion, the Humber Hawks (3-3), in what will be their final match before the winter break. The match can be streamed at ocaa.com/live, with action starting at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 27.
