Women's Basketball Notches Victory in Home Opener
(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (1-2) opened their home schedule on Tuesday night with a strong 67-62 win over Sheridan (0-3), marking their first victory of the season.
The Falcons set the tone with their aggressive style of defence in the first quarter, making it a point of emphasis to make life difficult for the Sheridan ball handlers. Ashlyn Anderson (Latchford, ON) made an impact early, cleaning up on the offensive glass for an easy putback, and then nailing an open midrange shot just moments later. Layla Mackenzie (Camlachie, ON) contributed by sinking a three and adding a fast-break layup during a 7-0 run that helped the Falcons close the first quarter with a six-point lead.
The second quarter opened with a three ball from Myra Ciccarelli (Hamilton, ON) for the Birds. However, Sheridan responded by going on a 7-0 run of their own, closing the gap to one point with two minutes left in the half. Fanshawe remained composed as Anderson picked up a key bucket and assist to help the Falcons close the first half up 29-25.
Fanshawe's defensive tenacity continued in the second half, stifling the Bruins' offense. Shauntee Centen (London, ON) took charge in the third quarter, and teammate Karyn TeBrake (Ottawa, ON) had two steals to shut down Sheridan. TeBrake added four points, three assists, and three rebounds, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the court.
In the fourth, the Bruins put up a late fight by drilling three unanswered three-point shots, cutting the Falcons lead to five. However, the Falcons depth and energy proved too much for Sheridan to handle in the end as the Birds ended the night with 37 bench points and 22 points off turnovers. Third year guard Micaela Howard (London, ON) came up clutch, knocking down two free throws to seal the game for Fanshawe.
The Women's team will be home again this Saturday, November 2nd at 1:00pm to take on the Redeemer Royals (1-2). The Falcons will attempt to feed off the crowd's energy in the nest as they continue their four-game homestand.
