Falcons Defend The Nest Against Condors
(London, Ontario) The Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (5-3) defended home court against Conestoga (1-7) with a 53-42 win at Glenn Johnson Athletic Centre on Saturday to notch their third straight victory.
The Falcons came out strong, opening the game with an 8-0 run fueled by aggressive defense and fast breaks. Sidney Deleary (Chippewa of the Thames) scored eight points in the first quarter to give Fanshawe an 18-10 lead after the first frame.
In the second quarter, Conestoga flipped the script on the Falcons and began forcing the issue on offence. The Condors' outscored the Falcons 17-8 in the quarter to take a one point 27-26 lead into the half.
Fanshawe came out in the second half determined to retake and control the lead. The Falcons ball movement was the key to their second half success as they created easy looks both inside and outside the arc. Joanna Smith (Simcoe, ON) knocked down two three-pointers in the third complimented by nine points and five rebounds by Ashlyn Anderson (Latchford, ON) who did her usual damage down low. The Falcons dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Condors 21-9 to take 47-36 lead into the fourth.
The game slowed down in the fourth quarter and Fanshawe let their defence close out the victory. Anderson, who leads the OCAA in blocks per game with 2.4, was a monster on the defensive end again for the Falcons this game as she finished with three blocks and four steals. Anderson also recorded 14 points and 15 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and second in as many games. Deleary chipped in with 13 points of her own which was a season high for her as Fanshawe cruised to a 53-42 victory.
The Falcons will play their final game before the winter break on Saturday November 30th at 1:00pm as they travel to Niagara to face a strong Knights team (6-1). The Women's Basketball team will have their next home game against those same Knights on Wednesday January 22nd at 6:00pm.
