(London, ON) - The Falcons women's basketball team (13-5, 3rd West) is advancing to the OCAA Women's Basketball Championship after defeating the East Division second seed Seneca Sting (14-4) on Saturday, February 28.
The Falcons stepped into a tough road environment against the Sting and kept their composure throughout the game. Fanshawe outscored Seneca in every quarter but the fourth, highlighted by a dominant 22-7 second quarter to enter the second half with a substantial cushion. The Birds held their lead and closed out Seneca 67-52, punching their ticket to the OCAA Championship, final four.
Leading all scorers in the game was Fanshawe guard Edith Eseme (Milton, ON) who finished with 17 points plus five assists and five rebounds. Falcons forward, Ashlyn Anderson (Latchford, ON), fresh off being named a CCAA All-Canadian, OCAA West Division First Team All-Star and OCAA West Division Defensive Player of the Year, dropped her second double-double of the post-season and broke a Fanshawe women's basketball playoff single-game record with a whopping 21 rebounds.
The Falcons will now travel to Hamilton for the OCAA Championship hosted by Mohawk College where the Birds will take on the host Mountaineers (17-1, 1st West) in their semi-final game on Saturday, March 7 at 3:30 p.m. It will be a tall task for the Falcons as Mohawk comes into the final four ranked second nationally, first provincially and will have the hometown crowd behind them. However, this Falcons squad is no stranger to big time upsets as last post-season they knocked off the Niagara Knights who were ranked tenth nationally at the time to advance to the final four. The Falcons dropped both their meetings with the Mountaineers this season.
This marks the second consecutive season advancing to the OCAA Championship for Fanshawe's women's basketball team. Featuring 11 returners from last year's team, a more experienced Falcons group will look for better results this go around as they fell short of the podium in 2025.
