(London, ON) – The Falcons women's volleyball team (9-4, 4th West) opened the Falcons Fest evening slate with a matchup against the Sheridan Bruins (1-10, 9th West). Fanshawe was dominant, delivering a clean 3-0 sweep in front of a packed Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre crowd.
The Falcons came out swinging early, starting the first set on a 10-1 run and setting the tone for what was a dominant performance by the Birds. Simone Pinsonneault (Gravelbourg, SK) was impressive, making the hitters' jobs much easier with 24 assists to showcase her playmaking ability. Pinsonneault also contributed on the defensive end, leading all Falcons with seven digs. Fanshawe took the opening set, 25-12.
The second set saw a more valiant effort from the visiting Bruins, as they jumped out to an early 9-5 lead before the Falcons rattled off four straight points to even the score at nine apiece. Fanshawe never looked back and took control of the set, claiming it by a score of 25-17.
The third set was more of the same for the Falcons, as they were simply too much to handle for the Sheridan squad. Leading the way offensively for Fanshawe was the usual duo of Jillian Lancaster (London, ON) and Grace McLean (Dorchester, ON), who tied for the team lead with 10 points each. Fanshawe delivered a 25-18 set victory to complete the sweep.
The Falcons will now be off until next weekend, when they travel north to Sudbury for matches against Boréal (0-12, 11th West) on Saturday, January 31, and Cambrian (9-3, 3rd West) on Sunday, February 1, in games with major implications for the OCAA West Division standings.
