(London, ON) – The Fanshawe women's volleyball team (10-6, 5th West) took on the Mohawk Mountaineers (6-10, 8th West) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon in the Birds' final regular season match before playoffs. The Falcons came up just short in a hard-fought five-set battle, falling 25-21, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-7.
The Falcons got off to a strong start in the opening set, jumping out to a 10-6 lead behind an impressive aerial attack. Mohawk responded to tie the set at 10-10, and the two teams traded points from there. Following a Mountaineers timeout, the visitors went on a 10-4 run to close out the first set, 25-21.
Fanshawe answered back in a big way in the second set with Simone Pinsonneault (Gravelbourg, SK) and Jillian Lancaster (London, ON) leading the charge. Pinsonneault set up her teammates all match, with Lancaster being the main beneficiary as she finished with a team-high 14 kills and 19 points. The duo connected repeatedly in the set as the Falcons evened the match with a convincing 25-16 set win.
In the third set, the Birds found themselves trailing 17-12 before three straight service aces from Grace McLean (Dorchester, ON) sparked a momentum shift. McLean's strong service gave Fanshawe the boost it needed to rally and take the set, 25-22.
The Falcons looked poised to close things out in the fourth set, building a 22-17 lead late. However, a resilient Mountaineers squad regrouped after a timeout and rattled off eight straight points to steal the set 25-22 and force a deciding fifth.
In the fifth set, the Falcons were unable to find their rhythm, and Mohawk pulled away early. The Mountaineers took the final set 15-7 to secure the match three sets to two.
Despite the result, the Falcons entered the match locked into the fifth seed in the OCAA West Division. Fanshawe will be on the road for a Valentine's date against the OCAA East Division's fourth seed, Canadore Panthers (9-6) on Saturday, February 14 in the first round of the playoffs.
