(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Men's Basketball team (4-2) handed the No. 9 nationally ranked Redeemer Royals (4-1) their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon. Fanshawe defeated the Royals 106-84 behind an incredible 16 three pointers, which is a new Fanshawe Men's Basketball record for most made threes in a game.
The Falcons opened the scoring with back-to-back triples from John Akende (Toronto, ON) and Hanani Ujullu (Kitchener, ON). Redeemer matched Fanshawe's hot shooting from behind the arc, hitting five threes of their own. The red and white ended the quarter with seven triples as a team. The score after the first frame was 29-28 in favour of the home squad.
The high-powered offense of both teams continued in the second quarter. Alfred Johnson (London, ON) scored in the paint to maintain Fanshawe's slim lead. Adrian Stevens (Toronto, ON) then found a cutting Akende for a layup. It was then Akende's turn for the assist, finding rookie Marko Maletic (London, ON) for fast break points. Fanshawe was up 55-49 going into the locker room.
In the second half, a huge block from Junior Luyeye (Toronto, ON) excited the home crowd and turned into transition points for the Falcons. Great hustle plays by Luyeye and D'Andre Austin (Toronto, ON) caused the Royals to turn the ball over and the Birds would capitalize. Maletic and Ujullu hit two 3-pointers in a row to extend Fanshawe's lead to 84-64 at the end of the third quarter.
A dunk from Luyeye got the crowd on their feet in the fourth frame. Johnson then had a bucket with the foul to continue the strong offensive play from the red and white. Fanshawe moved the ball well offensively, as six different players were in double figures. Ujullu had 20 points and 16 boards, while Maletic scored 21, Akende 19, Johnson 15, and Austin and Luyeye with 10. The Falcons shot 48.5% from beyond the arc in the game.
Fanshawe will look to continue their strong play on Wednesday, November 13, when they host the Lambton Lions (3-3) at 8pm.
