Fanshawe Women's Volleyball Sweeps Boreal
(London Ontario) The Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team (7-7) made quick work of the Boreal Vipers (0-12) in three sets Saturday night at Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.
The Falcons came out firing in the first set, led by Jaime Worsfold (Dorchester, ON), who delivered a strong performance on both offense and defense. Worsfold's aggressive attacks and impressive net presence forced the Vipers into unforced errors. She capped off her night with nine points as Fanshawe cruised to a commanding 25-12 victory in the opening set.
In the second set, the Falcons maintained their momentum and continued to dominate the match. Ally Taylor (Regina, SK) was instrumental in setting up her teammates, finishing with 10 assists. Taylor's pinpoint accuracy exploited Boreal's over-aggressive blockers, skillfully dropping balls between defenders to earn herself a few points. Fanshawe's disciplined play prevented the Vipers from putting together a run, securing the set 25-14.
Determined to close out the match, Fanshawe kept up their aggressive net play in the third set. Chloe Hunter (Oshawa, ON) emerged as the Falcons' secret weapon, contributing six service aces and 10 total points. Late in the set, Hunter delivered three consecutive aces, extending Fanshawe's lead and propelling the team to a 25-15 victory to complete the clean sweep.
Falcons Soar to their Fifth Straight Win in Clean Sweep of Cambrian
(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Falcons Women's Volleyball team (8-7) completed the second half of their back-to-back this weekend at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre with a three to nothing sweep of Cambrian (6-7). The Falcons finished the weekend without dropping a single set in either of their matches.
It was an electric atmosphere inside the gym on Sunday afternoon, with fans on both sides passionately cheering for their respective schools. With the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre rocking, the Birds fed off the home crowd's energy and started the first set with three straight points. Charlee Akehurst (Kitchener, ON) made her impact felt early, leading the first-set attack with four kills. Akehurst was a steady presence for the Falcons all afternoon, finishing with a team-high nine kills and 12 points. Akehurst's attacking play helped Fanshawe take the first set 25-16.
The second set was as tight as could be, with neither team able to put together a significant run. Both sides traded points and found themselves tied at 23 apiece late in the set. Ari Peake (London, ON) came off the bench and provided a spark, drilling a crucial kill. Akehurst then sealed the set with a winning ace, giving the Falcons a 25-23 victory.
In the third set, the Birds jumped out to an early lead and maintained it throughout. Jaime Worsfold (Dorchester, ON) was unstoppable, picking up multiple blocks to stifle Cambrian's attackers. Worsfold delivered several key plays down the stretch, finishing her night with 11 points to guide Fanshawe to a 25-21 set win and a clean sweep of the match.
The Falcons' next match will be back at home in the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre for Falcons Fest on January 25 at 5:30 p.m. Fanshawe will put their five-game win streak to the test against the undefeated Humber Hawks (15-0), looking to feed off the energy of the Falcons Fest crowd.
